Dialogue in Norwegian with English translation
Dad: Vil du ha litt kaffe?Would you like a little coffee?
Nora: Ja takk, bare litt.Yes please, just a little.
Nora: Vi har lite sukker igjen. We have little sugar left.
Dad: Ja, «lite» betyr nesten ingenting.Yes, “lite” means almost nothing.
Dad: Og vi har få epler i kurven. And we have few apples in the basket.
Nora: «Få» er som «lite», men om ting vi kan telle.“Få” is like “lite”, but about things we can count.
Nora: Så: litt kaffe, lite sukker, få epler. So: a little coffee, little sugar, few apples.
Dad: Helt riktig.Exactly right.
Dad: «Litt» er positivt: litt kaffe er fint.“Litt” is positive: a little coffee is nice.
Nora: Og «lite kaffe» høres trist ut.And “lite kaffe” sounds sad.
Nora: Da tar jeg litt kake også.Then I will have a little cake as well.
Dad: Bare litt, ja.Just a little, yes.
